The Quiz is in a simple format.  It’s based on the four stages of the Beauty-Brain Loop: Inner Beauty, Health, Outer Beauty and Environment.  For each statement, mark the appropriate number to rate your attitude on a 1-5 scale:

1—You disagree completely with the statement.
2—You disagree somewhat with the statement.
3—You’re neutral on or unsure about the statement.
4—You agree somewhat with the statement.
5—You agree completely with the statement.

          At the end of each of the four sections, we’ll ask you to total your score.  Then at the end of the Quiz, you’ll find out what your total score means.  So have at it.  And remember, the more open you are, even to uncomfortable truths, the more you will benefit.

Section One: Inner Beauty

Section Two: Health

OK, You Did It!
How did you do? Did you find most of the questions easy, or did you have to do some serious soul searching? We hope you found at least some of them challenging and thought-provoking and that you answered honestly. No one should score 100! The first time we took this quiz, we were surprised by some of our responses. We could have asked a hundred more questions about exercise, emotional health, grooming and all the rest. But then we would have a quiz so long that no one would ever complete it. These eighty questions are intended to give you a reliable picture of your current state in each of the four areas in the Beauty-Brain Loop: Inner Beauty, Health, Outer Beauty and Environment. Because until you know where you are, you can’t make plans to get where you want to be.

          But we know what you really want right now: to know how you did on the quiz.  Well, first please understand that there are no right or wrong answers.  There’s just you.  Clearly, we designed the quiz to reveal attitudes and lifestyles we consider healthy or unhealthy, but that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you if you scored poorly on one section.  It just means according to our judgment as physicians and women, there are changes you can and perhaps should make in order to become healthier, more attractive and happier.  Ultimately that’s what we’re after: happiness in bodies and minds that we love and treat as treasures.  So...let’s score the Beauty Prescription Quiz.

          In scoring the quiz, we’ve assumed that the best answer for each question is a 5 for "Completely Agree." So each set of twenty questions has a perfect total of 100. How well you did in each section depends on how far your score is from that perfect score.

100-80 in a section:

This is a great score. This area is obviously one of your strengths. You might have some work to do, but probably not much.

60-79:

This is an OK scoring range.  Some strengths, but there are obviously some things you’d like to improve upon.  That’s great; knowing what needs work is what this book is about.

59 or below:

You can really benefit from our chapter on this stage of the Beauty-Brain Loop.  Yes, you need some help in this area, but you have help.  We’re here to advise you on affirmative steps you can take now.

What the Quiz Means
Surprised by your scores in the quiz? Encouraged? Confused? That’s all right; they’re all legitimate responses. The most important reaction you can have to the Beauty Prescription Quiz is to be open-minded. Our hope is that the quiz will help you start being more truthful with yourself about the areas of your physical and mental health that could be better—to be more self-aware, not only about what’s happened in your past, but in real time, throughout your day. Because if our mutual goal is to change your habits and your lifestyle choices so that you become a more radiant, joyous woman, then you’ve got to do more than simply look back and say, "Hmm, that was a mistake. I won’t do that again." You must also have the awareness to catch yourself in the moment, when you’re overreacting to a stress situation or choosing to eat junk food, and say, "“Stop! This isn’t the new, more beautiful me." And remember perfection is not the goal either so if you come of course a bit that may be OK too. The goal is for the majority of your choices to take you in the right direction. Not every choice.

          Chances are, you scored pretty well in at least two of the four categories, so-so in another, and lower in a fourth.  We all have our weak areas.  We’ve put you through the Quiz to help you prioritize—to know which stage of the Beauty-Brain Loop you should be working on first.  As we said, the Loop has no beginning and no end, and each stage affects all the others.  So if your Outer Beauty score was the lowest, that’s a great place to start, perhaps by looking at your skin care, wardrobe or grooming.  You begin a skin care regimen and you start taking on a glow you didn’t have before.  People notice.  This affects your confidence (Inner Beauty) but also encourages you to work out and lose weight (Health).  You begin to look better, feel better and be better. Your self-esteem gets a shot in the arm, and before you know it people are getting whiplash while watching you enter a conference room.  See how it works?

          In the end, the Quiz is a tool for getting a handle on a question that can seem despairingly overwhelming: “How do I change my life?”  The answer is, you don’t.  You change a few manageable things at a time, things that snowball and affect other areas.  Before you know it, a few changes turn into a systemic transformation of your body or your attitude.  The key is to know what areas to change to have the greatest effect.  It’s like pulling a keystone out of a pile of rocks in order to create an avalanche.  We’re going to help you find your keystone, then sit back and watch the avalanche of attractiveness and magnetism that you’re going to become.

Into the Loop
We’re going to start talking about the four stages of the Beauty-Brain Loop.  Pay close attention to them all, because they are a kind of personal ecosystem.  You can’t tweak one part without seeing changes—sometimes unintended—in all the other parts.  Learn all you can.  But when you’re done with this book, go back and review the Quiz and the stage of the Loop where you scored the lowest.  That’s where your work should begin.  Of course, do whatever you can in all four stages, especially if you can make pleasurable, easy changes that yield quick results.  But if you address mild problems with your Health by putting in more time at the gym, but still have serious shortcomings in terms of self-esteem, pessimism and ability to trust others, you’re just going to spin your wheels.  Make progress wherever you can, but focus on where it’s needed most.
